Defence Ordnance Safety Group

DOSG is the MOD’s focal point for Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Safety. DOSG provides policy, advice and regulatory functions on behalf of the Secretary of State and monitors departmental performance to provide assurance on OME safety to the Secretary of State through the Defence Ordnance Safety Board.

DOSG is pan-MOD, with primary responsibility for matters relating to OME strategy, safety policy and its implementation, performance measurement and support. Head of DOSG (Mr Fred Edwards) is also Director Safety and Technology within DE&S’ Weapons Operating Centre with responsibility for D Weapons Technology and Integration.

Current activity

Policy - DOSG develops, maintains and promulgates OME safety policy, standards and regulations, and Major Accident Control Regulations (MACR), ensuring an appropriate framework to ensure safety at all stages of the OME life cycle.

Assurance - The team monitors the effective implementation of OME safety policies and standards through regular and robust audit, review and inspection activities and providing assurance to teams and DE&S through Project Review and Assurance.

Support - The team provides advice, guidance and support directly to teams on the acquisition of safe and suitable for service OME weapon systems (including those being procured to meet Urgent Operational Requirements) throughout the life cycle including the interpretation and application of policy, standards and regulations for OME Safety, and MACR.

People – D Safety & Technology (DS&T) ensures individuals in the OME community have a relevant set of standards and competencies to work to, compatible with acquisition standards; that suitable professional training and development is available to OME staff within the department, providing routes to professional qualification where possible.

Safety and Technology Integration Lead - The Technology and Integration lead is responsible for providing technology coherence across the Operating Centre and championing System Engineering and Technology Management skills.
