The ISSE has four key roles.
- To improve soldier agility and fightability, the main focus being a reduction in the weight burden.
- To manage sometimes disparate projects as a single programme and adopting proper programme management principles.
- To better exploit technology and to bring the effects of research into the front line more rapidly.
- To integrate all the soldier equipment both internally within the soldier system and also externally to other systems with which the soldier interfaces, such as vehicles.
