Combat Wheels Group

Combat Wheels Group (CWG) is a customer focused group within Defence Equipment and Support’s Director Land Equipment (D LE) Operating Centre (OC).

Mission

"To provide ‘through life’ equipment solutions in order to equip and support current and future operations."

Our role

The Combat Wheels Group is responsible for delivering equipment capability on behalf of the sponsor, Heads of Capability, Ground Manoeuvre and Special Projects, to users in the front line commands, principally HQ Land Forces, Director Special Forces and Permanent Joint HQ (on behalf of operational theatres).

Background

The Combat Wheels capability area is defined as all protected mobility land platforms procured under Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) procedures, and mobility, counter mobility and survivability equipment predominantly for the Royal Engineers. The Group is also responsible for the former Future Rapid Effect System, (FRES) Utility Vehicle and Basic Capability Unit, which is in the concept stage, and the Operational Vehicle Office.

What we do

The Combat Wheels Group comprises three teams: Manoeuvre Support, Protected Mobility and Utility Vehicle Teams, and the Operational Vehicle Office.

The Group headquarters includes the Head of Group, Chief of Staff and Business Manager, a Deputy Head of Commercial and a Financial Controller.

The Group Headquarters also includes the Operational Vehicles Office (OVO). The role of the OVO is to provide coherence to the delivery of Land Systems vehicle UORs, including associated sub-systems procured from across DE&S.

The Protected Mobility Team is around 60 strong and is mainly responsible for most Land Systems protected mobility platforms procured under UOR procedures and their in-service support. This includes JACKAL, COYOTE, RIDGBACK, MASTIFF, HUSKY, WOLFHOUND, ESCAPADE, SNATCH/VIXEN, WARTHOG and the future LPPV and Light Recovery Vehicle.

The Manoeuvre Support Team is also around 60 strong and is mainly responsible for manoeuvre support and counter mobility equipment used by Royal Engineers in the Army. This includes TERRIER, DCMC (Dismounted Counter Mine Capability), Bridging and the TALISMAN, Short Gap Crossing and UORs.

The Utility Vehicle Team is in the process of forming and will be responsible for the delivery of what was formerly FRES Utility Vehicle and FRES Basic Capability Unit.
