The aim of the DII Group is to deliver to defence a secure and coherent information infrastructure, at minimum whole-life cost, while maintaining continuity of service.
The Defence Information Infrastructure was conceived with the aim of providing a capability to exchange & share electronic information across the whole of Defence.
The provision of one information infrastructure is the responsibility of the DII Group’s delivery partner, ATLAS. ATLAS staff are drawn from the four partner companies – HP, Fujitsu, Cassidian (formerly EADS) and Logica. They will assume control of existing individual systems and progressively replace them with the new infrastructure. This will provide a standard, consistent platform for defence applications and deliver a more effective environment for the sharing of information and transmission of messages.
DII is delivered using the principles of the Smart Acquisition process and takes a whole-life approach.
The new infrastructure, known as DII(Future), is one of the largest information intrastructure programmes in Europe. It provides computing infrastructure and services that will enable sharing of information and collaborative working to a variety of groups and indviduals including those that currently have limited or no connectivity. Ultimately, it will provide 300,000 user accounts on 150,000 terminals across 2,000 MOD sites worldwide.
The service ranges geographically from the office environment in Whitehall to forward deployed headquarters located almost anywhere in the world. In service management terms, it ranges from normal office hours, to full 24/7 cover.
