Director Safety and Engineering

The Director Safety and Engineering team is here to provide specialist corporate support to DE&S and to the wider MOD on safety and engineering.

Mission

‘To provide authoritative safety, engineering & project management advice, enabling DE&S to equip & support our Armed Forces’


We provide high-quality policy, guidance and assurance services from all of our teams, including a new MOD Systems Engineering and Integration Group, with a strong focus to the priorities of:

  • Enabling improved corporate performance in the field of safety.
  • Promoting through life management behaviours.
  • Driving development of professional S&E skills across DE&S.

Safety and Engineering at a glance

Policy & Process

  • Deliver the Acquisition Operating Framework workstream for the Defence Acquisition Cahgen Programme DACP to provide an authoritative source of policy for UK MOD.
  • Develop policies and processes in our areas of responsibility to improve DE&S business and safety performance. 
  • Deliver cross-cutting defence quality authoritative policy and guidance for UK MOD.

Technical & Safety Services

  • Provide a range of technical services to customers, primarily DE&S. 
  • Provide advice and guidance on safety environmental and technical matters, and act as a critical friend to teams.

Assurance

  • Provide through life technical assurance to the DE&S Investment Board, ensuring that equipment and systems programmes undergo independent assessment prior to procurement approval.
  • In conjunction with D ISTAR, ensuring integration and coherency across the multiple platforms and systems operating and planning by the UK Armed Forces.

Safety & Environmental

  • Provide the DE&S lead for safety and environmental protection including safety regulation. Drive end-to-end safety and environmental coherency across DE&S.
  • Provide CDM with assurance that safety and environmental processes are defined and complied within DE&S, improving confidence that equipment, systems, support and logistics will be safe in operation. Assure CDM that legal obligations with regard to DE&S safety systems are being met.

Skills

  • Drive the development of professional skills across DE&S in Programme & Project Management, Safety, Logistics and Engineering.
  • Provide Skills Director leadership for all Engineering disciplines and act as Development Partner & Head of Profession for Quality Assurance & Configuration Management.
