Defence Equipment and Support

Airseeker Team

The Airseeker Team aims to sustain the UK’s airborne signals intelligence capability.

Project Airseeker will develop, deliver and sustain an airborne signals intelligence capability. This will be achieved by the delivery of three RC 135W Rivet Joint aircraft. They will replace the Nimrod R1 as a signals intelligence platform together with associated ground analysis equipment and training systems through provision of manned airborne electronic surveillance.

The Airseeker Team is responsible for the provision and through life support of the Rivet Joint aircraft with the first aircraft due for delivery in 2013 and two more delivered by 2017.

The Rivet Joint system is a military off the shelf solution and is an integrated aircraft and mission systems platform together with exploitation ground systems. It will be procured through a Foreign Military Sales case with the United States government.

Electronic signals intelligence is a key element of modern operations. The Rivet Joint sensor suite allows the mission crew to detect and identify signals throughout the electromagnetic spectrum and forward information to operation commanders when required.

Current Activity

The Airseeker project is in the development and manufacturing phase, which started in December 2010 for conversion of aircraft to the Rivet Joint standard.

Training of UK crews started in January 2011. Up to 150 RAF personnel – pilots, navigators, electronic warfare officers, intelligence operators and maintenance technicians - will be trained.
