Military Afloat Reach Sustainability (MARS) Tankers

The Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) Tanker project is part of the wider MARS programme, which will replace a number of existing Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) ships and provide new capabilities to support the Royal Navy (RN) worldwide.

The MARS programme consists of two classes of ship: MARS Tankers and Fleet Solid Support Ships. These ships will carry fuel, stores and provide logistic support for maritime and expeditionary forces including Carrier Strike.

MARS Tanker is a critical element of the future Navy capability and also to ensure we comply with international legislation on double hulled tankers. The Tankers will be capable of operating wherever the Royal Navy are deployed, including military tasks in hostile environments.

An international competition to achieve best value for money for MARS Tankers was launched in October 09, involving world leaders in the commercial shipbuilding industry. On current plans contract award is expected to take place in 2012.
