The Islander AL Mk1 is a military variant of the civil BN2T Islander aircraft, designed and constructed by Pilatus Britten-Norman Ltd of Bembridge, Isle of Wight now B-N Group Ltd.
Two Allison 250-B17C Free Power Turbine turboprop engines, driving Hartzell variable pitch propellers, power the aircraft.
The cockpit is designed for operation by one pilot. Full flight controls are, however, available for a co-pilot occupying the right hand seat. Seats for up to 9 passengers can be fitted in the cabin. The aircraft is fitted with an autopilot and has a comprehensive avionics fit including weather radar.
The aircraft is designed for passenger-carrying, freight and observation and can be configured in any of the following roles:
- Passenger carriage
- Freight carriage
- Pilot/Aircrew training
- Liaison
- Surveillance
- Photo reconnaissance
