Defence Secretary Des Browne was the Reviewing Officer at the event, and got the opportunity to inspect and speak to each of the 20 Cadets, from 134 (Bedford) Squadron Air Cadets, who are aged 13-18.
Mr Browne said:
"I was extremely impressed with the Air Cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron - they are a credit to the Air Training Corps."
The 134 (Bedford) Squadron Cadets recently won the Bedfordshire and Cambridge Wing Drill competition, coming first out of 31 teams for a third consecutive year. As a result the squadron's staff decided to write to Tony Blair requesting permission to hold a formal parade on his doorstep.
They trained for three weeks for the event which is one of the biggest that 134 (Bedford) Squadron have undertaken in its 67 year history. It is also believed to be the first time that any Air Cadet Squadron have held such an event in Downing Street.
Flt Lt Mark Robinson. Commanding Officer of 134 (Bedford) Squadron, said:
"The Cadets were fantastic on the day. They put a lot of hard effort into preparing for the parade. I know they were thrilled to meet Tony Blair and Des Browne, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity."
Parading in front of the Prime Minister in Downing Street should also prove useful training for the squadron in the next round of the drill competition which is being held at the Central and Eastern Region Field Day, at RAF Wittering on 3 September.
The 55,000 strong Air Cadet Organisation is one of the UK's largest national voluntary youth organisations. It is part sponsored by the Royal Air Force and encompasses the Air Training Corps and the RAF section of the Combined Cadet Force.
Mr Browne added:
"Our cadet forces give young people the opportunity to receive nationally recognised qualifications, first aid training and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The skills and training they receive make a positive contribution to their communities and to their own futures. This is why the Government is looking to increase the number of young people in the cadet forces, especially in state schools."
