Rfn Burkinshaw beat Mike Robinson at The Troxy in London on St George's Day, 23 April 2009, and was watched by an audience including fellow soldiers from across the country as well as members of boxing royalty including Michael Watson MBE, Julius Francis and Terry Marsh, and current fighters Ian Napa and Darren Sutherland.
Robinson started off the fight quickly, landing several telling punches; however, patient Rfn Burkinshaw used his superior fitness, discipline and skill to tire his opponent over several rounds.
Rfn Burkinshaw then stepped up the intensity and took control of the contest, stopping Robinson in the seventh round to win the English crown.
Rfn Burkinshaw said:
"This means the world to me. I have been boxing since the age of eight and always dreamt of winning a title. To win the English Super Flyweight title on St George's Day at an event that raised money for the Army Benevolent Fund was really outstanding."
The money raised from the bout, which is expected to be in the region of £20,000, will be split between two charities: the Army Benevolent Fund and the Edward Starr Charitable Trust.
