Fifty-four-year-old Ges Laker, a former Royal Naval Field Gunner and Physical Training Instructor, is walking anti-clockwise around the country.

He began this enormous feat in January 2009 when he set off from his home town of Warsash in Hampshire with his two faithful Labrador dogs, mother and son duo Phoebe, aged seven, and Sumo, aged three, for company.

Ges has so far covered over 5,800 miles (9,300km) and raised just over £8,000 for the St Dunstan's charity which gives physical and emotional support to blind and visually impaired ex-servicemen and women.

He and his dogs have been walking on average about 20 miles (32km) a day and sleeping in a tent in sub-zero temperatures. Ges said of his quest:

"I have wanted to do the walk for about 15 years now and I felt that if I'd left it any longer I'd be too old. My two Labradors, Phoebe and Sumo, are great company."

For the past few weeks Ges has been completing the Cornwall leg of his journey.

He has been able to meet up with his former Royal Navy shipmates in the Helston area. He said:

"My former Fleet Air Arm colleagues have looked after me while I've been walking round the Lizard and Land's End. They have put me up, fed me, given me a warm bed and walked with me. The support in Cornwall has been just fantastic."

The total mileage that Ges will cover is about 7,000 miles (11,000km) and it has taken him a year so far.

Ges is now heading towards Plymouth where he will stop at Devonport Naval Base. He anticipates arriving back in Warsash in mid-February/early March.

You can track Ges's progress by logging onto his website at www.lakerscoastline.org. All donations will be very gratefully received.
