Soldier of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment killed in Afghanistan

It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a soldier from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment has been killed in Afghanistan today, 10 July 2009.

The soldier was killed as a result of an explosion that happened during a deliberate operation near Nad e-Ali, central Helmand province, this morning.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said:

"The loss of this brave Tankie has hit us all deeply; we grieve for him at this very sad time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues who feel the greatest loss. His loss has not been in vain."

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
