Soldier from Royal Dragoon Guards killed in Helmand

The soldier, serving as part of Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (South), was providing security to his colleagues during a task to improve the field of view around a Check Point when the incident occurred this afternoon.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said:

"It is with deep sorrow I must inform you that a soldier from The Royal Dragoon Guards was killed this afternoon in southern Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand Province .

"He was attached to the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles Battle Group. He was providing security for a patrol that was conducting a clearance operation when tragically he was struck by an explosion. He died doing his duty.

"He was a courageous and dedicated soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice. He will be greatly missed and his actions will not be forgotten. We will remember him.”

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
