The soldier, serving as part of Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (South), was providing security to his colleagues during a task to improve the field of view around a Check Point when the incident occurred this afternoon.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said:

It is with deep sorrow I must inform you that a soldier from The Royal Dragoon Guards was killed this afternoon in southern Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand Province .

He was attached to the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles Battle Group. He was providing security for a patrol that was conducting a clearance operation when tragically he was struck by an explosion. He died doing his duty.

He was a courageous and dedicated soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice. He will be greatly missed and his actions will not be forgotten. We will remember him.
