The soldier died as a result of wounds sustained when the vehicle in which he was travelling came into contact with an improvised explosive device.

At the time of his death, the soldier was taking part in an operation to disrupt insurgent freedom of movement in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province, bringing increased security to the area.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Eastman, said:

"It is with great regret that I must announce the loss of a soldier from 216 Parachute Signal Squadron, Royal Corps of Signals. The soldier was patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand, bringing security and stability to an area previously dominated by insurgent intimidation, when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.

"His loss is a bitter blow, especially during this season of peace and goodwill. He died making a better, safer life for others; his sacrifice will not be forgotten."

Next of kin have been informed and asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
