Soldier from Duke of Lancaster's Regiment killed in Afghanistan
It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must announce that a soldier from 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment was killed in Afghanistan today, Friday 8 October 2010.
The soldier, attached to 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles, serving as part of Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (South), was killed in an explosion in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Eastman, said:
It is with great sorrow that I must report the death of a soldier from 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment in Helmand province this morning.
The soldier was carrying out a patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj area of the province, providing a reassuring presence to the local population seeking to go about their daily lives in peace, when he was hit by an explosion.
He gave his life protecting the people of the United Kingdom and Afghanistan - no more could be asked of any man. He will be sorely missed.
Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
