Soldier from 38 Engineer Regiment killed in Afghanistan

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a British soldier from 38 Engineer Regiment was killed in Afghanistan yesterday, Saturday 23 May 2009.

Ths soldier, who was working with 2nd Battalion The Rifles Battle Group, was killed as a result of an explosion that happened whilst on patrol near Sangin in Helmand province yesterday evening.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said:

"My fellow Sapper gave his life for his country and the freedom of the Afghan people; there is no greater sacrifice than this. Our deepest and heartfelt sympathies go to his family and loved ones and we offer our thoughts and prayers to them all at this most painful and distressing time."

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
