Soldier from 33 Engineer Regiment, Royal Engineers killed in Afghanistan

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm a soldier from 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), Royal Engineers, was killed in Afghanistan yesterday, Thursday 31 December 2009.

The soldier was part of the Counter-IED Task Force and died from wounds received as a result of an explosion in the vicinity of Patrol Base Blenheim, near Sangin, in Helmand Province.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said:
"It is with deep sadness I must confirm to you that a British soldier from 33 Engineer Regiment was killed by an explosion near Sangin, in Helmand Province.
"He was part of the Counter-IED Task Force, leading the fight against the Improvised Explosive Device in Helmand.
"His sacrifice and his courage will not be forgotten."
Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
