Soldier from 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles killed in Afghanistan

It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must announce that a soldier from 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday 15 October 2011.

The soldier was killed by a gunshot wound when the checkpoint that he and his team were protecting in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province came under insurgent small arms fire.
Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Mackenzie, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said:
"It is with great sadness that I announce that a soldier from 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles was killed during operations with Afghan Police partners to extend security in the Nahr-e Saraj region of Helmand.
"Whilst protecting a checkpoint, his team came under insurgent small arms fire, during which he received a fatal gunshot wound.
"The thoughts and prayers of all those serving in Helmand are with his family at this very difficult time."
Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
