Soldier from 2nd Battalion The Rifles killed in Afghanistan

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must announce that a British soldier from 2nd Battalion The Rifles was killed in Helmand province yesterday, Tuesday 2 June 2009.

The soldier was killed as a result of an explosion that happened whilst on a patrol near Gereshk.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said:

"We share in the pain that is felt by his family, friends and colleagues at the loss of this courageous soldier; our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
