Soldier from 28 Engineer Regiment dies in Afghanistan

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must announce that a soldier from 28 Engineer Regiment, attached to 21 Engineer Regiment, died in Afghanistan today, Friday 21 September 2012.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The soldier was involved in a shooting incident at Forward Operating Base Shawqat in the Nad ‘Ali district of Helmand province. A full investigation is ongoing but the death is not being treated as a result of hostile action.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Major Laurence Roche, said:

I am very sorry to report the death of a soldier serving with 21 Engineer Regiment who was involved in a shooting incident at Forward Operating Base Shawqat this morning.

This is a tragic day for everyone serving with Task Force Helmand in Afghanistan as we mourn this sad loss of life. Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends during their time of grief and loss.

The soldier’s next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
