Rifles' soldier killed in Afghanistan

It is with great regret that the Ministry of Defence must announce that a soldier from 1st Battalion The Rifles was killed in Afghanistan today, Friday 30 January 2009.

The soldier died from wounds he received during an exchange of fire while on a joint UK and Afghan National Army patrol north of Musa Qaleh, Helmand Province.

Spokesperson for Task Force Helmand, Commander Paula Rowe, said:

"The pain and sense of loss at the death of this brave soldier will be deeply felt by his family, friends and all those who served with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this difficult time."

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
