The creation of the Joint Security Stations (JSSs) marks a new period of co-operation and closer working between the two security forces. The stations will provide community bases from which the Iraqi Police Service and Iraqi Army will plan and conduct security patrols together, enabling a sustainable and permanent security solution for the people of Basra.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Major General Adel, Provincial Director of Police who spoke of the importance of the facility:

"This centre will increase the stability and the security as well as eliminate crime for good. It is another force for the area and finally the citizens of Basra will feel more secure through co-operation with the security forces and feel comfortable with what has been established."

Major General Aziz, General Officer Commanding the Iraqi Army's 4th Infantry Division added:

"The Joint Security Station is an additional step forward adding to the Iraqi Security Forces ability to establish security and by this centre we can benefit from the information we obtain and eliminate crime."

The ceremony was also attended by Major General Andy Salmon OBE, General Officer Commanding, Headquarters Multi National Division (South East). The three senior officers addressed the assembled policeman and soldiers as well as local media. Major General Salmon said:

"This is a really positive step, it allows the police to have the confidence to work within the local community, but most importantly, to allow the people to really see that things are coming back to normal."

The coalition is supporting the development of the Iraqi Police Service by deploying US Military Police units and International Advisors to support and mentor at every level within the force, just as the Military Transition Teams continue to develop the Iraqi Army:

"We continue to enjoy the relationship that we have with both the police and the army," said Major General Salmon. "The arrival of some US Military Police will continue this important relationship and help the Iraqi Police work effectively. By working together it is clear about how much can be achieved."

Basra and the surrounding region have undergone a significant transformation over the past five months leading to a real sense of optimism for the future. As the security situation continues to stabilise, increasingly Basrawis will look to the Iraqi Police Service to guarantee their safety by conducting normal policing duties and tackling crime.

The improved security situation provides the opportunity for much needed reconstruction and economic activities to take place to improve the lives of all Basrawis.
