British soldier killed during counter-terrorist operation in Iraq
16 Jul 06
An operation was conducted by Multi-National Forces in Iraq in the early hours of this morning, 16 July 2006, to apprehend those associated with terrorist activities.
During the course of this operation British soldiers came under small arms fire and two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds. They were immediately evacuated to the British military hospital at Shaibah logistics base.
It is with great regret the Ministry of Defence can confirm that one of the soldiers subsequently died of these injuries. We are in the process of informing their next of kin, and no further information on the identity of this soldier will be released until that process is complete. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family at this difficult time.
The other soldier's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
As a result of the operation two men suspected of involvement in serious crime and terrorism in Basrah province have been apprehended. Operations like this are essential to help provide a secure and prosperous environment in Basrah so its people can live without fear of intimidation or the threat of violence.
