It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of a British soldier in Basra, Iraq today, Monday 5 February 2007.

The soldier was a member of 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

The soldier was killed in a roadside bomb attack and was serving as part of the British contingent of the Multi-National Force (MNF) in south eastern Iraq.

The roadside bomb detonated targeting a MNF Warrior patrol manoeuvring on routine duties in the Al Ashshar district of Basra City. A number of civilians were also injured in the roadside bomb.

The soldier's next of kin have been informed and have requested a period of 24 hours grace before further details are released.
