British serviceman killed in Afghanistan
28 Dec 06
It is with profound regret that the MOD must confirm that a UK serviceman has been killed yesterday, Wednesday 27 December 2006, in southern Helmand province, Afghanistan.
MOD Announcement
The soldier, from 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, was killed during a reconnaissance mission in the desert to the south of Garmsir, in which a vehicle was involved in an explosion resulting in one fatality, one serious injury and two minor injuries. At this stage it is too early to say what caused the explosion but there were no Taliban in the vicinity and there was no follow on contact.
The Commander of the UK Task Force, Brigadier Jerry Thomas said:
"It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of a serviceman yesterday in the south of Helmand. My thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time. My thoughts are also with the serviceman who was seriously injured and I wish him a speedy recovery
"This tragedy is made even more poignant during this special time of year. The serviceman's colleagues remain on the ground and are continuing with their task despite their loss. They are determined to complete their mission."
Next of kin, who have now been informed, have requested a 24 hour period of grace before further details are released.
