The airman, serving as part of the Camp Bastion Force Protection Wing, was killed yesterday evening in the vicinity of Camp Bastion in Helmand province.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said:

"It is with deep sadness I must inform you that an airman from the Royal Air Force Regiment, serving as part of the Camp Bastion Force Protection Wing, was killed last night.

"The airman was part of a vehicle patrol that was conducting security operations in the area to the north of Camp Bastion when he was killed in a traffic accident.

"He died in the course of his duty. He will be remembered by his many friends. His sacrifice will not be forgotten."

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
