David Haye, the British boxing legend and WBA heavyweight title holder, took time out from his busy schedule ahead of his showdown with Wladimir Klitschko on 2 July 2011 to meet Service personnel and show his support for Armed Forces Day. He said:
Our Armed Forces deserve our thoughts and gratitude for all they do for us.
England test cricket captain and triple Ashes winner Andrew Strauss, who was victorious in the recent test series against Sri Lanka, led the tribute on behalf of the England team, saying:
We support the tireless efforts of the servicemen and women in the Armed Forces.
The sacrifices they make are hugely significant and Armed Forces Day is an excellent way of taking time to recognise their commitment in circumstances that are at times very different to the life most of us know.
Rugby League club Leeds Rhinos are putting on a day of activities at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on the eve of Armed Forces Day to thank the Armed Forces, with a Royal Navy versus Royal Marines Origin match preceding the Rhinos’ home clash against Bradford Bulls.
