The Royal British Legion is looking for nominations of individuals, community groups and commercial organisations that go out of their way to support the Armed Forces Community.
See the Legion's website for more information and to nominate someone for the awards.
Prince Harry, a Lieutenant with the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals), served in Afghanistan with the British Army for more than two months.
Praising the new Friends of the Forces Awards, His Royal Highness said:
"These awards are an excellent idea, and I am very proud to be involved.
"I know how important support from home can be. For those serving in the British Armed Forces, the knowledge that others are thinking of them has a hugely positive effect that cannot be underestimated. I remember that very accurately."
Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely, the Legion's National President, invited members of the public to step forward with nominations:
"The Friends of the Forces Awards will say thank you to anyone who has contributed materially to the well-being or appreciation of our Armed Forces," he said.
"We hear of so many amazing acts of kindness and support that we strongly urge people to submit nominations for these exciting new awards."
The Legion is looking for individuals, groups and organisations that have contributed to the well-being and appreciation of the Armed Forces. For example, this could include people who have:
- planned and delivered some form of help, advice or support to the Armed Forces family;
- organised a significant event either celebrating, or fundraising for, the Armed Forces family;
- educated their community about the important role of the Armed Forces family and the sacrifices they make;
- organised an event of remembrance;
- campaigned on behalf of the Armed Forces family;
- promoted the values of the Royal British Legion.
The Friends of the Forces Awards are open to individuals of any age, community groups, and commercial organisations. All individuals, groups or organisations must live or be based in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Nominations close on 14 April 2010.
Winners will be chosen in categories recognising individual, community, corporate and youth contributions.
Winners will be announced in eight regions covering England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and those shortlisted for the national awards will attend a royal gala ceremony in London in July.
