206 single living bed spaces across four blocks at Dalton Barracks have been refurbished by RPC South in a £1.85M project.
The refurbishment programme was managed by DE under the Soldier First initiative which aims to upgrade the poorest grade accommodation blocks to improve the morale and general wellbeing of the occupants. The project is ongoing and is set to achieve a total of 306 refurbished bed spaces by 31 March 2010.
Work done at Dalton Barracks includes the replacement of bedroom furniture, fixtures and fittings in the soldiers’ rooms. In addition, the clothes washing and drying facilities have been improved to include fitted units with washing and drying machines and separate drying rooms with a fitted Belfast sink. New carpets have been fitted throughout and the blocks have been redecorated.

The refurbishments also include energy saving lighting throughout and passive infra-red controls in corridors and ablution areas, reducing the building’s carbon footprint. Bathrooms in the accommodation blocks have been reconfigured to provide more showers, which will increase water use efficiency.
Major Clive Osborne, Quartermaster 145 Brigade said:
"The Soldier First project has improved the quality of life of the soldiers greatly, whilst also improving the site infrastructure, the improvements are very much overdue, but very welcome."
