The decision to construct the new ward was made at the end of 2006 with building work beginning in January 2007.  The work was completed a few months later with patients moving in for treatment in May 2007.

The new ward adds 30 extra beds to the world class medical facilities that are available to injured Service personnel. This new annex is known as a step down unit where low dependency patients will be cared for as they prepare for the next stage towards their eventual discharge. Mr Twigg said:

"It is an excellent facility and I am delighted to be here to open it.  It is important we have not only this space but the brand new state-of-the-art facility, which underlines the commitment of the Defence Medical Services and the Government to provide the best rehabilitation facility for our Armed Forces."

The 200 staff at the DMRC provide specialist care for members of all three Armed Services with orthopaedic and sports injuries, spinal injuries, neurological and rheumatic conditions. There are also workshops that include the manufacture of prosthetic body parts for those who have lost limbs.

The aim of the centre is to return those who have been injured or are seriously ill to full physical and psychological fitness and back to duty in the shortest possible time.

Mr Twigg added:

"I am a regular visitor to Headley Court and I am more impressed every time I come here. The staff are outstanding and the facilities are world class. Everyone who has been through here speaks highly of it."

As well as meeting patients and staff, Mr Twigg paid tribute to the work of Squadron Leader Suzanne Oakley and thanked her for the work she has done over the past five years at Headley Court.

Earlier this year Sqn Ldr Oakley received the award of the Royal Red Cross for her leadership, expert knowledge and commitment. Sqn Ldr Oakley will retire from the RAF after 16 years service on Thursday 19 July 2007.

Mr Twigg said:

"Squadron Leader Susan Oakley has excellent personal qualities and has set the highest standards for herself and her team. I want to take this opportunity to thank her for everything she has done here."

Headley Court treats injured personnel irrespective of where or how they received their injuries.  Admissions in the past 12 months include personnel injured in road traffic accidents, sporting incidents, during training and on operations.
