The IiP assessors singled out a number of excellent examples of good practice including a sound approach to flexible working, giving staff freedom to work autonomously and identifying talent and encouraging development.

The Investors in People Standard provides a practical framework for improving business performance and competitiveness through good practice in human resource development. The Investors in People Standard and Profile are promoted and developed by Investors in People UK - an organisation whose main stakeholder is the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.

Permanent Under Secretary for the Ministry of Defence, Sir Bill Jeffrey, said:

"IiP recognition across the whole department is a fantastic achievement, particularly as it has been attained against a backdrop of change programmes and intense operational demands. The IiP process is, in effect, an audit of what we are doing to improve our management of people, and - although there is much still to do - recognition confirms that we are on the right track. The MOD recognises the importance of training and developing staff and is working hard to be an even better employer."

The assessment covers approximately 276,000 people within MOD, which makes it by far the largest organisation ever to achieve corporate assessment with IiP. It is more than one and a half times bigger than the next largest organisation.

"Employees are central to the success of any organisation and there's a clear relationship between the way a workforce is managed, motivated and supported and its performance in support of organisational goals," said Simon Jones, Chief Executive, Investors in People UK.

"The MOD recognises this link and we are delighted that Investors in People has played such an important role in helping the Department develop and implement comprehensive people management practices. Congratulations to the MOD which is now the largest employer to be Investors in People recognised."

The Investors in People Standard is delivered by a partner network:

  • In England, the network of Investors in People Centres
  • In Scotland, Scottish Enterprise (SE) or Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE)
  • In Wales, the Business Skills Delivery Team at the Department for Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, Welsh Assembly Government
  • In Northern Ireland, the Department for Employment of Learning
