The Longdon Gymnasium has a fully equipped CV training area, a weight training area with fixed machines and free weights, a large games hall and 4 squash courts. Sporting activities on offer vary according to the instructors in Theatre but the range can include anything from aerobics and spinning to windsurfing lessons.
The Tumbledown Gymnasium is a large sports hall used for lessons and indoor sports but also includes a golf simulator (small charge applicable) and a climbing wall. There is also Laser Quest available here at the weekends for adults and children (age dependent).
MPC also has a 33-metre heated swimming pool, a sauna and a sun-shower.
Gull Island Pond is a shallow lake located at East Cove between MPC and Mare Harbour and is home to the Water Sports Centre equipped to cater for the canoeing, kayaking, dinghy sailing and windsurfing (at various levels).
MPS has its own joint Service Adventurous Training Centre located at Hillside in Stanley where Service personnel can undertake either AT or FD courses participating in activities such as mountain walking, climbing/abseiling, mountain biking and canoeing.
If you are partial to golf, a course is available at the MPC and also in Stanley. Please note that the golf courses are not as you would expect to find in the UK. There are no greens as such, just rough areas. At Stanley golf course you will find a unique hazard of a mine field.
Other activities available include mountain biking, go-karting, paint balling, surfing and fishing.
Personnel Insurance
Changes to the MoD policy on civilian use of sport facilities that includes dependants place conditions on civilians using the sports facilities at Mount Pleasant Complex (MPC). Although civilians are allowed access to the sports facilities, there is a requirement that individuals using these facilities must have their own 3rd party liability and personal accident insurance. A corporate 3rd party liability insurance to cover all civilians has been obtained by BFSAI.
However, there still remains the issue of personal accident insurance, which should be obtained before using the sports facilities. If individuals continue to use the facilities without personal accident insurance, they do so at their own risk. If you have any queries or questions regarding this policy, please contact J8 Policy and Personnel on your arrival.
It is the policy of MPC to allow dependants to use all the PEd facilities when available and on the understanding that military personnel and training matters take priority. Dependants under the age of 16 can only use the gymnasium when supervised by a suitable qualified adult and taking part in organised sports session; they may not use any of the CV or weight training equipment. Dependants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult when using the swimming pool.
