Brecon is located on the A40 between Abergavenny and Llandovery. Historically a thriving market town now is changing with the times. The town sits under the gaze of Pen-y-fan the highest point of the Brecon Beacons (familiar to those personnel attending the courses run at the Infantry Battle School!). The location makes Brecon an ideal base for touring the Beacons, and certainly during the summer months tourists abound.
The town has recently undergone changes with the building of the ring road. There are however still historic ties with its Cathedral and Museums. Especially worth a visit is The South Wales Borderer's Museum. Major banks and "high street" shops are closely grouped around the town centre. Cafes, hotels and pubs are plentiful. Every August the Jazz Festival is hosted in Brecon which has grown into a world-wide renowned event which sees the town reverberate to professional and amateur sound.
Located on the banks of the nearby canal is the Brecon Theatre. Theatre Brycheiniog offers a variety of professional and amateur shows and has a restaurant, Tiffin, which opens daily.
Crickhowell is a small well served town sitting on the A40 between Brecon and Abergavenny. The military presence now centres around the families estate and just a few minor training units on Cwrt-y-Gollen camp.
Abergavenny is a historic Market town. Supermarkets and town centre shopping is available. A thriving market takes place on Tuesday's and Saturday's and is well worth a visit.
Dering Lines has a fully equipped gym, squash courts, Army Learning Centre, hairdressers and Spar shop, with an additional shop that sells military kit, the RV-3 Shop. There is also a nursery and a community centre.
