Do you have everything up to date?
Medical
If any of your family have any special needs or medical requirements you must inform the unit personnel staff as there can be limited facilities/medical care available overseas and not all specialist care is available. However, the sooner you inform the personnel staff, the more likely it is that arrangements can be made to provide any necessary care.
If any member of your family has ongoing health needs you should ensure that they have an adequate supply of medication prior to relocating - that is enough to last whilst you register with a new GP and collect a new prescription. If you are moving overseas remember that some drugs will need to be sent from the UK - so make sure you have plentiful supplies for all family members before departure.
Check that you have all the appropriate medical documents. If you are pregnant or have recently had a baby there will be restrictions on travel, contact your travel supplier or speak to your GP.
Take your and your families NHS cards with you; you can get a copy from your GP. If you have a complex medical history ask for a copy of your computer record to take with you, these will help your new GP whilst records are being forwarded.
Waiting Lists
Are you moving while still on a waiting list? The Armed Forces Covenant states that the Armed Forces Community should enjoy the same standard of, and access to, healthcare as that received by any other UK citizen in the area they live. It also states that family members should retain their relative position on any NHS waiting list, if moved around the UK due to the Service person being posted.
You are advised to discuss your move with your GP. GPs should be aware of waiting times at the hospitals they may refer patients to.
Always ensure that you notify your change of address to the GPs and hospitals. Also always discuss your move with your GP and your consultant as appropriate.
Dentist
Access to dentists is a common frustration. The Armed Forces Covenant is monitoring this issue. The Department of Health works closely with the MOD to ensure Service families are able to access NHS dentistry in the same way as the rest of the population, and are not disadvantaged by the fact that they move more frequently than others.
To help find a dentist in you area, contact your local HIVE or follow the 'Find NHS services in your area' link under External Links.
