Although not bound by UK education law, SCE seeks, so far as possible, to prevent discrimination against disabled pupils and to increase the accessibility of schools to disabled pupils.
The SCE strategic response to the requirements of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 (SENDA) and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) is set out in the SCE Accessibility Strategy.
Against the background of the SCE Accessibility Strategy, all SCE schools and Music Centres are required to produce their own Accessibility Plans, showing how, over time, they will progressively increase the extent to which disabled pupils can participate in the curriculum, improve the physical environment to increase the extent to which disabled pupils can take advantage of education and associated services, and improve the delivery to disabled pupils of written information which is provided to pupils who are not disabled.
Schools with associated Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) settings or boarding houses should include those settings or boarding houses within their Accessibility Plans.
School Accessibility Plans are regularly presented to the School Governance Committee (SGC) for approval. Further information may be obtained from the Headteacher or Chair of the School Governance Committee (SGC).
