Your Security Questions Answered

Information about the measures we take to protect national security and the safety of the communities we serve.

What security measures are used by MoD?
Whilst most jobs at MoD require only a fairly basic level of vetting some may, by virtue of the nature and sensitivity of the post, need a higher level of clearance.

From April 2007 to work for central government you will need to pass the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (Baseline Standard), MoD is no exception to this.

What is the Baseline Standard?
In July 2006 the Cabinet Office issued the Baseline Personnel Security Standard. If you apply for employment with a major government department or agency you should expect to be asked to provide information and documentation to confirm your identity, employment or educational history, Nationality & Immigration status and Criminal record (unspent convictions only).

Any information used in completing the Baseline standard security check is subject to the Data Protection Act and will not be used for purposes other than specified and will not be used to pry into your personal life.

What will I need to bring to my interview?
You will need to bring Photographic ID either your Passport, Photo-card driving licence or HM forces Card. The person interviewing you will check that you are the person in the photograph and will attach a copy to your application information.

If the post that you are applying for requires any specific qualifications e.g. a degree please bring the original certificate.

I don’t have a passport or driving licence, what should I do?
Don't panic! This is not uncommon particularly for younger people who apply for jobs with us. In the first instance, you should contact PPPA or the person named on the letter inviting you to the interview.

It is likely that you will be asked to provide other supporting documents and/or a passport sized photograph signed on the back by a person (who is not a relative) of standing in the community (e.g. Justice of the peace, medical practitioner, officer of the armed forces, teacher, lecturer, lawyer, bank manager, civil servant) who has known you for 3 years or more and can confirm your identity.

What will I need to bring with me on my first day?
You will be provided with details of all the information that you will need to bring with you on your first day if your application is successful. You will also be forwarded or directed to electronic copies of any further forms that you may need to complete e.g. health declaration.

What other checks might I be subject to?
Because of the sensitive nature of some of our work you may need to complete a full Security Clearance check (SC) which will involve a detailed questionnaire to assure us that you to not pose a risk to national security.

In rare circumstances some posts will require a Developed Vetting check (DV) which is a much more detailed examination of your personal and professional life.

Posts that work with (or have a high potential to work with) children for example, teachers and doctors, will require a Criminal Records Bureau check (CRB).

If the post that you are applying for requires a CRB or either of the higher levels of security vetting you will be informed in due course and issued with the relevant explanatory information and forms.
