A RAF C-17 transport aircraft, loaded with United Nations Humanitarian Aid

A RAF C-17 transport aircraft, normally based at RAF Brize Norton, is loaded with United Nations Humanitarian Aid at the Danish airport of Billund, ready for its onward flight to Banda Aceh, scene of some of the worst devastation.

When it comes to the procurement, management and distribution of equipment and other materials, the MOD is in a class of its own. It needs to be.

The sheer geographical diversity of our operations - and the sophistication of our modern weapons systems - calls for an extraordinary level of care, planning and financial accountability.

Defence Equipment and Support is the largest purchasing organisation within Government and is responsible for acquiring major weapons systems in partnership with the Defence industry.

These defence projects - which increasingly involve cutting-edge technology and collaboration with other countries - require a powerful combination of managerial, technical, financial and contractual expertise.

Literally billions of pounds are at stake, and our objective is to eliminate waste and get the necessary equipment faster, cheaper and more efficiently. To this end, we create integrated project teams - often including industry professionals - who are responsible for managing the entire project lifecycle.

But procuring equipment is only the start. Getting it to military personnel in the field presents an equally challenging task - particularly when that field could be anywhere from Afghanistan to the Caribbean.

This could involve organising engineering support for fixed wing aircraft overseas. Or supplying clothing and other provisions to troops engaged in lengthy peacekeeping duties. Or organising the repair, maintenance and modification of equipment already in service.

The importance of these activities cannot be overstated. As part of our team, you will be creating the framework for a flexible military response in times of conflict, and cost-effective support to the front-line in times of peace.
