Continuous Personal Development The MOD is committed to Investors in People and is dedicated to the training and development of its staff. Considerable training and development opportunities are available such as internal training courses and interactive learning centres. Applications to gain financial support for further education courses leading towards recognised qualifications are also considered.
Alternative Working PatternsThe normal working week for staff is 41 hours gross for workers in London and 42 hours gross for staff outside of London, including lunch break from Monday to Friday. Most units and agencies operate alternative working patterns that can provide you with the freedom to arrange with your manager a personal working arrangement that suits your needs and MOD's.
For example, this may include flexi-time, part-time, compressing your five day week or opportunities to work from home. Part-time working can involve any number or arrangement of hours and can be worked in any grade. There are no restrictions on the number of hours worked or days attended.
As a good employer - and as a matter of policy - the MOD seeks to extend the availability of alternative working patterns to meet the business need and demand at all levels.
Sports and Social
The MOD has a sports and social club, which all staff are eligible to join. It offers a vast variety of sports and activities, many at low cost compared with commercial alternatives. Upon joining the opportunity exists in some areas to use gym facilities, again for a small cost. Please click on the logo below to see the Civil Service Sports Council website.
Welfare
The MOD has a Welfare Department which provides specialist knowledge and support to employees on all types of problems. We strive to enable you to give your best contribution to defence by supporting your needs wherever possible; including for example possibilities for special leave and the provision of crèche facilities and vouchers.
Childcare Support
The MOD was the first Civil Service department to set up a work place nursery some nineteen years ago and now accounts for about half of all the nursery places provided by the Civil Service.
Work place nurseries exist on 45 MOD sites, offer in excess of 1,700 full time places for children, aged between 3 months to 5 years, and are frequently so popular that they need to operate a waiting list.
For children in full time education, up to 12 years old, fifteen sites provide access to a holiday play scheme (sometimes shared with another government department) and fourteen sites also offer before and after school care.
Childcare facilities are frequently subsidised, either directly or indirectly, and a limited number of MOD sites offer childcare vouchers, which provide targeted assistance with childcare costs.
Remuneration
Administrative grades start at £14,726 and go up to £20,074; Management grades are paid between £22,082 and £69,409. Posts in the Senior Civil Service range from £58,200 to £208,200. Performance Bonuses are awarded on merit (2009 figures).

The new pension scheme for new entrants, nuvos, will apply to all people joining the Civil Service from 30 July 2007. nuvos is a high quality, defined benefit, pension scheme with a pension age of 65 and benefits which reflect pay throughout the career rather than in the final years before leaving.
"Note - There are special rules which apply to new recruits who have previously been members of the PCSPS and those who are already in receipt of PCSPS pension benefits following retirement, early retirement or ill-health retirement. PCSPS membership is not open to individuals who are employed on a fee-earner basis or to overseas locally engaged civilian staff. Some MOD civil servants who, because of their profession, are eligible to belong to another occupational pension scheme are not covered by the PCSPS. These arrangements are summarised below."
