The MOD maintains two publicly accessible sources of photographs - the '
Defence Image Database' and the '
Royal Navy Photographic Image Database'. Both these databases contain a large number of images which can be viewed via the internet. For information on applying to use images from either of these databases, and the fees that are chargeable, see the link '
DID / RNPID Imagery' on the right hand side of this page.
Besides the two databases noted above, it is sometimes possible to obtain copies of MOD Crown Copyright imagery from other sources. If you have obtained such an image, and wish to use it, information on applying to use these, and the fees that are chargeable, can be found under the link 'Other MOD imagery'.
If you wish to use any images (photos, trademarks, badges, pictures, charts, etc) that are MOD owned or Crown Copyright, then you can apply for use, as described in the documents noted above, using the Directorate of Intellectual Property Rights questionnaire, a copy of which can be found under the link 'Image licence questionnaire'.
If you are granted a licence, it will usually take the form of a Standard Licence, with standard terms and conditions, a blank copy of which can be seen by following the link 'Standard copyright licence'.
Film footage
If you have obtained copies of film footage from an MOD source that you wish to use, or know the location of footage within the MOD that you wish to use, then information on fees and applying to use footage can be found under the link 'Film footage fees'.
Note that footage kept in various MOD archives may not be released to you until such time as you have agreed a licence for your usage, at least in principle.
In order to apply to use footage, use the document under the link 'Film footage questionnaire'.
