Term 4 Leadership in the Strategic Environment

The formal academic component of the course was completed on the 1st of July bringing to close an intense three week period of lecture and debate for the RCDS Members.

This period is traditionally open to industry participation and the College welcomed representatives from Carillion, Raytheon, Thales UK, AugustaWestland, Rockwell Collins, Rolls Royce and SOCA

The Term initially commenced with some of the academic underpinnings of leadership, covering subjects as diverse as neuropsychology, leadership theory, and derailment, before the content changed to reflect the views of practitioners from the financial, media, police and political spheres. We were fortunate to have a wide range of leading politicians appear. The Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP, Minister of State for Northern Ireland talked about the challenge of moving into a Ministerial position. The Rt Hon David Blunkett MP and Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP shared their respective experience of the 9/11 and 7/7 terrorist attacks. The Rt Hon Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon GCMG KBE PC discussed his experiences in the Balkans, on a panel with the General Sir Mike Jackson GCB CBE DSO, before talking about the challenges facing the world political system. The final political leader was The Rt Hon Lord Owen CH FRCP who addressed the topic of hubris in strategic leaders providing a salient message for the Members who are shortly to return to their respective organisations as strategic leaders themselves.
