In week 19 the RCDS 2011/12 cohort divided into seven study groups to visit and assess different parts of the United Kingdom. Our strategic analysis of the UK itself is the point of departure for term 3 in which we engage critically with the contemporary challenges facing the different regions of the world. Members are encouraged to look objectively at what is presented, to assess the trends rather than take a snapshot and to draw conclusions about the prospects for the country going forward.

The RCDS 2011-12 course concluded with the Prize-Giving ceremony on the 22 July, with the prizes presented by the Commandant RCDS Charles Style and representatives of the sponsors from Deloitte, BAe, Fujitsu and Mrs Langford. On Wednesday 20th July, the Secretary of State for Defence, the Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP visited RCDS to deliver the final address to the RCDS Members of the current course.

The week of the 4th July saw Seaford House take on a mantle of intense diplomatic negotiations, culminating in a meeting of the United Nations Security Council as they dealt with a range of international incidents that broke out across the world.

The formal academic component of the course was completed on the 1st of July bringing to close an intense three week period of lecture and debate for the RCDS Members.

As part of the programme on the Asia-Pacific region, Indranee Rajah, currently a Deputy Speaker in the Singaporean Parliament, addressed the current course on the challenges and opportunities facing Singapore.

On Friday 11 March RCDS hosted a roundtable on Sudan. This had been organised by the College in preparation for the study visit in May by an international group of RCDS Members to Khartoum and Juba. But it also continued a series of successful Defence Academy seminars on sub-Saharan Africa.

The College was buzzing during our new Strategy Exercise. Developed entirely in-house, the event (run towards the end of the Second Term at the beginning of December 2010) was designed to develop members’ understanding of the practical implementation of strategy.

An integral part of the RCDS course is a visit to Brussels to hear at first-hand from representatives of the European Union and NATO in order to improve Members understanding of the different nature of those two organisations, their role and the future challenges they face.

From the 25 to the 28th of May a delegation of UK Members travelled from London to Paris for a series of bilateral discussions with French Members of the Centre Des Hautes Etudes Militaries (CHEM).

The RCDS 2010 course received a keynote address from Mr F W De Klerk, the former State President of South Africa, on Wednesday 12 May, where he addressed the lessons from South Africa’s Transformation Process.
