Language Advice and Placements Section (LAPS)

The main business of LAPS is to source tutors for languages not taught in-house at DSL, and then to quality assure this training, mainly for Defence Diplomats aswell as bespoke operational courses.

LAPS Responsibilities

To out-source, both on- and off-site, all languages that are not currently taught by military and civilian personnel at Defence Training Establishments (including DSL) for a variety of sponsors including IP&P (formerly DDefDip) and PJHQ.

To provide Language Advisors (LA) to act as subject matter experts (SME) on all language related enquiries.

To out-source spouse language training for spouses of eligible personnel.

To attend MOD Languages Examinations Board (MODLEB) and University of Westminster Setting, Marking & Moderating Boards.

To support the United Kingdom Inter-Departmental Standing Committee on Languages, (UKIDSCOL) a cross-governmental languages group formed to see where savings can be made in public expenditure on language training.

OC LAPS is UK secretary for the Bureau for International Language Coordination (BILC), the NATO agency which is the guardian of language standards (STANAG 6001), with 2 x meetings per annum. (See Link)
