MOD Police - The Investigation of Crime

The MDP Criminal Investigation Department investigates crime that impacts significantly against defence capability. This can include theft or damage to key military assets; criminal threats to the physical security of the MOD estate such as damage to security fences, barriers and control gates; or crime on Service family accommodation estates particularly during overseas deployment of Service personnel.

Crimes investigated by other police forces
The local Home Office police force will take the lead on more serious offences including deaths on military establishments, Official Secrets Act inquiries, and terrorism investigations (where the Metropolitan Police have the national lead). MDP are often called upon to assist the lead force by providing defence policing expertise.

The relationship between MDP and Home Office and Scottish Government police forces is governed by agreed protocols.

Major Incident Units
MDP has two major incident units (MIUs) incorporating specialist computer systems to support major investigations undertaken on MOD sites, ranging from serious and complex fraud and large-scale theft to serious sexual offences and work related deaths.

Fraud Squad
The MDP Fraud Squad investigates serious fraud and corruption offences against the MOD.

The Squad works closely with the MOD’s Defence Fraud Analysis Unit (DFAU) and also provides fraud awareness and prevention advice across the MOD. On major cases, the Squad works closely with the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

Fraud Awareness
Any fraud that diverts resources away from the frontline defence of the UK is damaging, potentially dangerous (eg covert delivery of substandard equipment) and, if undetected, costly. The end result of undetected fraud is a weakening of the UK's defence capability and a threat to our Servicemen and women, and cannot be tolerated.

The MDP Fraud Squad supports the MOD procurement officers who oversee the thousands of contractors large and small who supply goods and services to Defence.

Anyone can report incidents of theft or deception to the

MOD Fraud hotline: 0800 161 3665

Allegations are always treated seriously and, if appropriate, investigated by MDP CID officers.

Professional Training
The Fraud Squad runs an annual training course which Royal Military Police and Home Office police officers attend. MDP is one of only four forces in the UK able to deliver this nationally accredited fraud training.

The National intelligence Model (NIM)
MDP follows the principles of the Police National Intelligence Model (NIM) in operating an intelligence-led approach to policing. The Fraud Squad has formed a pro-active investigations unit which examines intelligence, and a financial investigation unit which seeks on the MOD’s behalf to exploit new legislative powers to seize the proceeds of crime. The unit can deal with confiscations and restraint of assets.
