Defence
International policing is now recognised as a cornerstone of Post Conflict Rebuilding/Resolution and Peace Support Operations in many areas of the world. Responsibilities for the UK’s contributions are shared between the MOD, the FCO, the Department for International Development and the Home Office.
MDP’s current complement of around 80-100 officers serving in international missions represents one third of the UK international policing contribution. Officers are currently deployed to the Balkans, Georgia and Afghanistan under arrangements managed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Past deployments have included Kosovo, Iraq, the Sudan and Sierra Leone.
MDP International Police Officer
The provision of civilian police officers to peacekeeping missions is a valuable way of fostering international relations and honouring treaty requirements, as well as promoting best practice in fledging democracies, encouraging trade, dealing with international crime, and helping reduce poverty by promoting internal security.
