Defence Intelligence is an integral part of the Ministry of Defence. We are headed by the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), who is personally responsible to the Secretary of State for Defence, through the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and the Permanent Secretary of the MOD.
The Chief of Defence Intelligence, a serving three-star military officer, is owner of the defence intelligence process, with responsibility for the overall management of defence intelligence throughout the Armed Forces and single-service commands. In carrying out this function CDI provides strategic guidance on the management of all defence intelligence assets, including those used to support military operations.
Defence Intelligence is also an essential element of the UK's central intelligence machinery, contributing staff and resources to the Cabinet Office in support of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) - the UK's national intelligence committee.
CDI is a member of the Joint Intelligence Committee and one of its deputy chairmen. The JIC produces authoritative intelligence assessments on behalf of the UK intelligence community as a whole and is the main national instrument for advising the Prime Minister and Cabinet on intelligence collection and analysis priorities and the assessment of the results.
