The Nation's Commitment: Cross-Government Support to our Armed Forces, their Families and Veterans.
MOD and DWP launch new Jobcentre Plus 'Champions' for Armed Forces and publication of the Service Families Employment and Skills Taskforce Report
Minister for Veterans, Kevan Jones, and Department for Work and Pensions Minister, Lord Bill McKenzie, attended the official launch of the Jobcentre Plus Armed Forces Champions in Essex on Wednesday 10 March 2010. A day that also saw the publication of the Service Families Employment and Skills Taskforce Report. Against the backdrop of the Colchester Jobcentre Plus office, plans for the Jobcentre Plus Champions were outlined to Kevan Jones, Ministers, as well as representatives from Colchester Garrison, the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency and the Career Transition Partnership.
These 'champions' are part of a package of measures to support the families of Service personnel announced by Harriet Harman, Minister for Women and Equality, and Bob Ainsworth, Defence Secretary.
The Taskforce Report published today outlines a number of key developments that are being progressed in line with the Taskforce's remit to help Service families, including looking at how childcare and school places' allocation meet the needs of Service families, the creation of the Jobcentre Plus Champions, and a new web-based one-stop-shop for military families looking for employment and training. The Nation's Commitment
In early 2008, Government asked all departments what more could be done to demonstrate our commitment to the Armed Forces and our gratitude for their service and sacrifice. This Command Paper is the result of that process, and it offers a comprehensive framework to address these issues.
Two principles underpin it. First, it is designed to end any disadvantage that armed service imposes on our people, their families and veterans. It specifically seeks to counter the difficulties that follow from being required to move around the country or the world, and identifies those areas where special treatment is needed to achieve this. Second, the Paper sets out how we can better support and recognise those who have been wounded in the service of their country.
