Who may use the Redundancy calculator and what information should I have to hand?

Before you start you should have the following information to hand:

Your pay details from JPA or JPA E107 Pay Statement
Your Pension Scheme
Your actual date of enlistment
The number of days you may have had in detention (This is non reckonable service for pension benefits)
The dates of any breaks in service you may have taken (This is non reckonable service for pension benefits)
Your total reckonable service

What Redundancy Scheme am I in?

There are 2 redundancy schemes:

The Armed Forces Redundancy Scheme 2006(AFRS 06)

This scheme is for the members of the Armed Forces Pension Scheme 2005 (AFPS 05).

The tax-free lump sum that is only available to AFRS 06 participants and is paid in addition to AFPS 05 benefits is known as a Compensation Lump Sum (CLS).

The Armed Forces Redundancy Scheme 2010(AFRS 10)

This scheme is for the members of the Armed Forces Pension Scheme 1975 (AFPS 75). The tax-free lump sum that is only available to AFRS 10 participants and is paid in addition to AFPS 75 benefits is known as a Special Compensation Payment (SCP).

For more information on each scheme click on the link on the right hand side under Related pages.

How does the AFRC know which scheme I belong to?

One of the first questions you will be asked is which Armed Forces Redundancy Scheme (AFRS) you belong to, if you are still unsure consult the AFRC Help Station Notes on the AFRC introduction page.

The AFRC will then take you through a set of questions which relate to the AFRS scheme you specify. By following a series of questions, and using drop-down menus, the calculator will give you a forecast of benefits relevant to the AFRS.

Please ensure you read the notes on the screen as it will set out the assumptions that are made with your selections. If you input a start date after 6 April 05 the AFRC will assume you are a member of AFRS 06 as the AFPS 75 scheme was closed to new entrants after this date.

How the calculator works

On opening the AFRC you will be presented with links to the relevant redundancy documents, caveats and must read notes. Finally a disclaimer is presented that you must accept before you are able to proceed. The AFRC will allow you to input your details to provide a forecast of your redundancy and pension benefits based on your redundancy exit date and the promulgated redundancy rules.

Points to Note

The information given is for guidance only and does not constitute an entitlement to the forecast benefits stated.

The calculator does not show any dependants' benefits. Details are in the pension scheme booklets on this website.

The forecast does not include transfers in from another pension scheme or the value of any added years contracts you may have.

I have aggregated my Service will the AFRC calculate my Redundancy correctly?

If you have rejoined the Armed Forces and have a preserved pension award in the AFPS 75 or AFPS 05 you are entitled to aggregate your most recent period of previous service with your current service. However, you must apply to do so in writing, to SPVA, before terminating your service.

If you are a member of AFPS 75 and have insufficient service on your current engagement and have not opted to aggregate your previous service you may not qualify for immediately payable pension benefits or resettlement grants. You will only be entitled to a second preserved pension award.

If you are a member of AFPS 05 and are aged 55 or over on the date you leave service, and have not opted to aggregate your previous service, your immediate pension at age 55 or over will be based on your current period of service and your earlier service will be paid to you as a preserved pension at age 65. If you leave service before the age of 55 with insufficient service for an early departure payment, your previous and current awards will be deferred until you are age 65.

To calculate your pension forecast for aggregated service you add your preserved pension service to your current service.

For AFRS 10 members

The calculator assumes that the leaving rank you use is your substantive rank and you have held this rank for at least two years. For the rules on substantive rank, please read the Help Station Notes or speak to your unit administrative staff.

The calculator does not take into account any Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs) that may be been paid to improve benefits.

The calculator does not forecast life commutation.

Acting Rank (AFRS 10 Members Only)

You will be required to enter additional Acting Rank information during the later calculation processes and must read the Acting Rank Help Station Notes fully in order to ensure that an accurate SCP calculation is made.

Medical

A person cannot be considered for redundancy compensation if he leaves the service on Invaliding terms. JSP 764 Part Ch 2 0203 (e) Ch 3 0303 d) refers.

Gurkha Pension Scheme
