Health Physics - Depleted Uranium

The Minister for the Armed Forces announced in January 2001 that the UK will enhance its existing environmental surveillance programme in the Balkans to ensure that no health threats to our forces, and indeed to the local civilian population, are overlooked.

The MOD Enhanced Environmental Monitoring Programme was established by the Directorate of Safety & Claims (DS&C) and includes members of DS&C, the Environmental Monitoring Team of the Royal Army Medical Corps, and Dstl Radiation Protection Services.

The Enhanced Environmental Team were tasked to investigate Depleted Uranium (DU) contamination associated with known DU attack sites in the British sector of Kosovo and sites where British Forces were based. The team was also tasked with investigating other indicators of environment quality within the British sector of Kosovo.

Comparison of Kirkcudbright and Eskmeals Environmental Monitoring Data with Generalised Derived Limits for Uranium, June 2002 (See Related pages)
This study compares the measured uranium levels reported in the environmental surveys to publicised guidelines for interpreting monitoring levels, in order to identify if further investigation is needed at the ranges at Eskmeals and Kirkcudbright where DU has been fired as part of the research and development programme for DU tank ammunition.
