Gerry is Chairman of Standard Life, one of the UK's largest savings and investments businesses. He also chairs Standard Life's businesses in Hong Kong and China and sits on the board of Standard Life's joint venture in India. He is an Independent Non-Executive of Deloitte, a newly-created role following recommendations made in the 2010 Audit Firm Governance Code.
He was previously a senior investment banker at Schroders and ran businesses in London, North America and Asia Pacific. He specialised in mergers and acquisitions and capital-raising for major companies worldwide. Prior to that, he was an official in HM Treasury where he was responsible for privatisation and policy towards nationalised industries.
Gerry has held a number of senior appointments in the public and private sectors and has served as one of the UK's Business Ambassadors. He helped oversee HM Treasury's Operational Efficiency Programme, is UKTI's Special Representative to India for Financial Services, and sits on the board of the UK Government's Shareholder Executive.
He served on the Board of RAF Strike Command (subsequently Air Command) from 1999-2007, chaired the RAF Audit Committee and was a member of the Defence Audit Committee, carried out a study on Civilians in Defence for the Secretary of State for Defence in 2010-2011, and is a member of the Defence Reform Steering Group chaired by Lord Levene.
