The RAF and the Local Community
Kerrier District Council have established a Nancekuke Single Issue Panel, the focus of which concentrates solely on the Remediation Project - information is also made widely available to the local community through the Nancekuke Working Party (which is again sponsored by Kerrier District Council). The Project Team also engages regularly with members of Cornwall County Council, and Portreath / Porthtowan Parish Councils.
The Environment Agency Kerrier District Council and the Remediation Project
In February 2001, Kerrier District Council, based on the voluntary information provided by the RAF, designated RAF Portreath as a Special Site [under the Contaminated Land (England) Regulations 2000] and determined that each of the five dumpsites (designated A to E) should be declared as ‘Contaminated Land’ under the Part IIA Environmental Protection Act 1990. At this point, responsibility for the site passed from Kerrier District Council to the Environment Agency.
The Environment Agency is an independent and impartial body that acts as the primary external regulator for the Project, however, they work closely with the District Council. The Environment Agency has undertaken several site visits and there is frequent dialogue between their regional and national representatives.
